Something That Just Made Me Say...REALLY!!

I am quite surprise to see Arkansas Today still simulcasted on the out of state Nexstar stations. I am at home today and actually wanted to watch some noon news so I turned to KTAL..but forgot Arkansas Today was being broadcast on the channel.  Remember when the simulcast started, Nexstar said the program would feature and use resources from the other Nexstar channels it was being broadcast on.  All you see is Arkansas news and weather. Like I said when it first started, I am not sure why Nexstar doesn't want to use the resources it has at its stations that the program is being broadcast on.  OR why not just let the different stations do their own noon news!  Just makes sense...and who knows would make more cents Nexstar!

KTAL's not going up against KSLA's long established News at Noon, which dominates the 12:00-12:30 time slot. That's why KTBS decided to have their midday newscast from 11:00-12:00.

Heck, KTAL could get more viewers at noon even if all they did was RERUN their AM NEWS. Showing Little Rock News and expecting E.TEX and NW La. advertisers to buy into that is fundamentally stupid as far as TV Broadcast Biz goes. If they think they're adding value to national/regional buys by saying: You get Mkt Penetration in E.Tx & NW La... yet their ratings continue to suck..suck..suck.. (cuz no one in E.Tx or NW La. gives a rip about Little Rock news--duh!)... how long do you think national/regional spot will continue to buy that? They get ratings/data and their buys are often based on CPP (Cost Per Point) which means.. no ratings ...no higher price.
This is sooooo stupid on sooo many levels. But then again... we're talking Nexstar management genuises in Irving. Guess as long as stock price is high and they get their sugar, no one pays attention to the details.
Nexstar on a local TV broadcast level is just plain dumb, dumb, dumb!

KTBS has two or three channels and they rerun the heck out of their local newscasts. I don't watch them much but I see they have local sponsors and promo packages running all the time.

@2:29 PM

You are not alone. The people in Monroe LA, Vicksburg MS, and Joplin MO, complain about the same thing.

I was near a TV around noon today and for grins I channel surfed local noon newscasts. I have to agree with the postings about KTAL airing Little Rock news at noon. It makes absolutely no sense. Even if I lived in SW Ark., the area is more defined by Texarkana or Shreveport than Little Rock or Central Arkansas even. Pretty much a waste of valuable TV real estate from what I can see.

With regard to these regions outside central Arkansas, this erroneous newscast situation aired deliberately shows that the broadcaster does not care about you and does not respect you.

And?

At 9:48 AM, February 05, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

11:27pm ... and as a result of not offering local news at Noon... I couldn't care less about KTAL and have no incentive to tune in. So screw 'em. And people wonder why their news ratings still suck and are in last place for the past 10 to 12 years or more!

"last place for the past 10 to 12 tears or more?" You're being kind. KTAL's been in "last" place for decades. Long before Nexstar took over.

In case everyone has forgotten, KTAL did have a midday newscast from 11:30-12:00 for years. That newscast was discontinued in 2002 in order to add a 5:00 PM newscast. The ratings for the midday newscast were so low no one missed it when we pulled it.

I think everyone expected Nexstar to improve the newscast ratings and become a contender when compared to the newsjoke that was run by WHECO or whomever owned the station before. KTAL was really bad before Nexstar bought it. Bad lighting, bad cameras, bad audio, bad everything. But now after what 12 or more years of Nexstar owndership, they have a much better look and got the technical issues cleaned up. Yet they continue to lag in #3 slot.
I agree that it is incredibly stupid to run a Little Rock newscast in this market. What are they thinking?

At 8:58 PM, February 05, 2014, Anonymous Former KTAL Employee said...

KTAL is 100% better then it was, but it really doesn't matter who owns the station. KTAL has a 50+ year history of bad newscasts in this market, which they may never overcome.

The chances of KTAL bringing back a midday newscast after a 12 year hiatus are very slim. If you really want a midday newscast then you should take action. Start a petition. Write and call the station. Write and call Nexstar Broadcasting's home office in Irving Texas. They can add a 30 minute newscast from 12:30-1:00 to air local ArkLaTex news after Arkansas Today which is not going away.

They might as well run infomercials or test patterns at noon for all I care. If I happen to be channel surfing at noon and I see a LOCAL newscast, I may watch a few minutes for room noise and catch a weather update. But if I land on KTAL at noon and see Little Rock news...I pass. It's ironic because I see KTAL's image spots branding LOCAL NEWS and this is as blatant a contradiction if ever there was one. And I really doubt petitioning this assholes would matter. The only thing they understand is power and money and clearly they must be making enough money with showing this crap to empty seats.

Yes, we are making $ off this free content. More $ then we make off paid programs.

Imagine how much more money KTAL could make if they just did away with the AM, Evening and 10 o'clock.
It's pretty clear they're not interested in local audience, just the $$$.

The Ark-La-Tex is not "out-of-state" to Arkansas. I live in Louisiana, but less than a mile from the Arkansas state line, and I have a vacation home in Hot Springs. The Arkansas Today broadcast is interesting to me.

FCC Report on the State of Local News: June 2011 www.fcc.gov/infoneedsreport

EXCERPT:
"On close inspection, some aspects the modern media landscape may seem surprising:
>
An abundance media
outlets does not translate into an abundance reporting.
In many communities, there are now more outlets, but less local accountability reporting. "

SO for Nexstar to brand themselves as LOCAL NEWS yet broadcasting news other than germane to their market of licensure is contradictory to their brand and their community mission.

Why won't Mallory say her due date? Why is she not on at noon anymore? Will she keep her job?

You should go back to fcc.gov and file a complaint.

The way KARK is treating her pregnancy, she will probably give birth on live tv. You would think she was the first woman to be pregnant. No one cares!

Just wondering but does anyone really watch KTAL newscasts anymore? They've always been in last place as long as I can remember. I've heard someone who used to work there say that they're so cheap that they can still be last and make enough money to keep corporate happy. And from what little I've seen they're not really doing anything to set themselves apart or better than 3 or 12. Shreveport-Texarkana is what it always has been: a mediocre market and it will never change.

At 1:06 PM, February 11, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Obviously they do, or it would not be on the air. Viewer demographics in this market have never changed. KTAL viewers are in and around the greater Texarkana area, and the rural counties and parishes outside of the city limits of Shreveport and Bossier City.

It's no secret broadcasting is a low paying industry. All of which has been well documented on various threads on this blog. Nexstar Broadcasting is known industry wide as a low paying company. You can make more money working wrapping burritos, dropping fries, and delivering pizzas.

1:06PM: "...Nexstar Broadcasting is known industry wide as a low paying company..."

True that! A buddy of mine who works in management at a broadcast group (not Nexstar) told me they're known as a "Slash and Burn" company. They acquire properties, consolidate resources past the point of critical tolerances and maximize cash flow. On paper they're debt-to-assets is sky high but their ability to leverage and manage debt is all that matters. A broadcast bubble that seems to be ever expanding for the time being. As long as the stockholders and debt holders are happy, nothing else matters at this point.

P.S. replace "they're" with "their"
Don't you hate it when that happens? LoL!

Your friend is spot on 2:52 PM. They are truly a horrible company. It's a case of you just have to be there to understand. That is why there are more former Nexstar employees then current Nexstar employees. Some of us move on to other stations and other broadcasting groups. However, more and more of us are choosing to leave broadcasting, and making a hell of a lot more money then we ever made in broadcasting.

And just a few minutes ago, I saw yet another KTAL image spot touting their "LOCAL NEWS" for the ArkLaTex.

Reminds me of someone in politics saying: "...if you repeat something long enough, people will believe it's true..."

There has always has been local content in Arkansas Today. The morning show crew records it when they are record the local news and wx cut-ins for The Today Show, then transfer it to KARK for air.

Yeah really! KTAL 6 has always had low audience shares. If it weren't for the bump they get from the old folks tuning in early to watch Wheel of Fortune, they'd barely have any news shares at all.
