Shreveport Station Repaints the Screen

KTBS/Channel 3/Shreveport is now using a new graphics package.  Below is a screenshot:

It looks better. But their set seems to contrast with the graphics.

DAMN! At all the 3s everywhere

At 10:33 AM, December 19, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Still bad, but MUCH better than the old Powerpoint-looking-90's-template" that they were using. I do get so tired of those big red threes everywhere..... just cause there is empty space does not mean a three should there.

Now, if we can move the idea that the set was a huge mistake.

I wonder if it is so red because of what other commenters have said about them using Fox talking points now.

SIDENOTE: Any word if KSLA is going to update theirs to start using the new Raycom set?

I have noticed that they are using diff package with some promos that don't match the current set.

And lastly, thought I would share what I ran across on YouTube of 3, 6 and 12:

@10:33 AM

The red set matches KTBS' political affiliation and views, and yes, it was/is a huge mistake. The new graphics package is much better. They first started using the red and gold graphics package around this time of year so I thought it was a special thing for Christmas. Another poster on here informed us that was the graphics George chose. The only reason he chose the red and gold was because he wanted to use the same red, white and blue graphics package KTAL had just started using. The company refused to sell the same graphics to another station in the same market so he chose the red and gold. I forget if it's the ABC or NBC station in Temple-Waco-Killeen that is still using the same red and gold graphics package.

I think the new few pics are a huge improvement. But their set is still horribly designed. Here's how I rank the local stations in Shreveport.

Sets
1)KTAL. I know, very generic Nexstar set but it's laid out correctly. Throwing to weather seems smooth.
2)KSLA. Plain and simplistic. The weather center seems to be hidden. The option to report from the weather center is convenient.
3)KTBS. TOO MUCH RED. Reds almost have pink hues which doesn't look professional. The weather lab is terribly laid out. You barely see it. Throwing to weather is awkward.
4) KMSS. Generic news out of Tyler, TX. Appears to be in front of a Green screen.

Graphics:
1)KTBS. Probably the best in the Arklatex now. Would be better if they took out the 3s everywhere. One three is enough.
2) KTAL. I like the colorful graphics. I like the contrasts.
3) KSLA. Very boring and cheesy. Two colors that are contrasting. That's about it.
4) KMSS. Looks like they were made in paint.

I contacted ksla a month or so ago about the new promotion graphics. They said that they were getting new graphics.

Now all of them should get rid of the damn bug logos at the bottom of the screen that obnoxiously covers news crawls, portions of the weather map, parts of news footage, etc. The things can be done less obtrusively if they have to be done at all.

At 2:05 PM, December 19, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ktal's bug is obnoxious because it spins. KTBS's doesn't need to move. Ksla's is too big. At least KTBS has started taking it away during weather.

When I saw the words "Child Pornography", I thought another one of their reporters was in trouble

I really like the new graphics; however, the colors fight that Republican Red set.

7:23pm Good one...LoL!

It's interesting how KTBS, the most conservative station in this market, has the most scandals.

At 1:47 PM, December 21, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KSLA had their share when Ed Bradley was GM and from what I've been told by a friend who used to work there, there were a few other scandals that were kept hush-hush thanks to Bradley getting good legal advice.

The rumor was that there was a paternity suit settled with hush-money and non-disclosure agreement. And that was just one of other issues.

I also had one female friend apply for a sales-job at KSLA and everything was fine up until they started telling her how she needed to dress, her hemline had to be such & such and talked to her about her what she did when off the clock. She thought this was inappropriate and decided that KSLA wasn't where she wanted to be with such big-brother attitudes.

It's about time. Somebody must've told them that every CW affiliate uses the network's green scheme, not the blue scheme that KPXJ uses.

Blue, green. Who gives a crap

At 12:53 AM, December 22, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@1:47 PM

That's ancient history. We're talking about what's been going on in the past 10 years since Bradley departed the building, and eventually Shreveport.

Orange graphics with a red set? Ewe!

Whatever happened with the arrest of the former KSLA'er who allegedly set up a meeting with an underage girl at a casino which was actually a sheriff's sting... anyone have a followup? I think this happened two years ago and was posted on this forum.

Check the archive. Everything is in there.

Getting back on topic. With the colors in this new graphics package does this mean KTBS plans to change the set color to match, or continue having their graphics and set colors fighting each other?

5:51PM:

Here's the thread about the KSLA reporter you asked about. FWIW...there haven't been any updates since 2012 so no new-news.

It'll be a cold day in hell before George pays for a new set.

At 9:22 PM, December 23, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, remember that mega-weatherLab monstrosity with the cheesy alerts that flashed on like tornado, thunderstorms, etc. And they had those giant rear-screen monitors.
That set was so butt-ugly but they kept it for years until they got this set about 3 years ago.

At 10:45 PM, December 23, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I understand not wanting to spend money on a fancy set but you could at least look at the design of others before making decisions. Look at a top rated station in a large market and see how they do it! I like WFAA out of Dallas and their set.

At 12:45 AM, December 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

How funny. WFAA is the KTBS of Dallas. Or is KTBS the WFAA of Shreveport? Both stations are owned and operated by very conservative Republican good ole boys.

At 12:51 AM, December 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Regardless, theyre the highest rated news in dfw and I like their set.

At 1:12 AM, December 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Send them your resume. They're always hiring.

At 8:37 AM, December 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"WFAA is the KTBS of Dallas. Or is KTBS the WFAA of Shreveport?" That is so true and spot on 12:45 AM.

At 11:25 AM, December 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As far as local ArkLaTex Ratings go:
KSLA has the stronger audience numbers... KTBS has KTAL creeping up on some dayparts.

At 11:47 AM, December 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I believe 8:37 AM is referring to both stations political views, not their market ratings. I've lived in Dallas for years and agree with the WFAA-KTBS comparison. I cringe every time I come home and see how crappy KSLA and KTBS have become. And the "talent" pool is very shallow and weak.

At 2:41 PM, December 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

the Shreveport market really has changed. I never thought I'd see the day when one time market leader ktbs has KTAL creeping up on them since they use to be far far far in 3rd place.

At 4:57 PM, December 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes it really has, and I see it declining more and more every time I'm in town. I'm so glad I left this market when I did. Horrible old KTAL's turn around is remarkable. They still have some things to work on, but they are finally a legit news station. Just another example of how things change. Does anyone know if KTAL is still being micromanaged from corporate?

At 11:37 PM, December 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pretty sure Nexstar's corporate dweeb still has his fingers in things. But at least KTAL has a no-nonsense News Director who has some experience.

At 12:40 PM, December 25, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL could still improve. They need some work with the morning anchors. Weather folks are fine with 2/3 having lots of experience. Reporters could easily be tuned to be better.

At 4:15 PM, December 25, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"They need some work with the morning anchors." Dan Jovic?

At 8:02 PM, December 25, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All of the reporters are either fresh out of college or came from some other bush-league station. Very green and it shows. Can't say much about the AM anchors because I rarely tune into the AM. When I do, I get the fake-upbeat delivery that seems contrived and insincere. Yawn... I'd rather watch Weatherchannel graphics. KTAL AM set reminds me of college TV station setup.

At 9:48 PM, December 25, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dan's pretty! Hope he's not going anywhere. Since his wife is the 5,6, and 10 anchor I guess they're a package deal.

At 10:25 AM, December 26, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Any word on when KSLA will roll out their new graphics?

At 2:04 PM, December 26, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Some anchors are just too sweet.

At 6:22 PM, December 26, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I heard KSLA isn't rolling out their graphics any time soon. And Dan is too pushy and in your face for me.

At 8:56 PM, December 26, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You do have two other alternatives.

At 10:23 PM, December 26, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

THANK YOU, Agent Obvious. I had no idea before you told me!! Again, thank you!

At 11:11 PM, December 26, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't like Dan. He seems so fake and like it is putting on a diva act. I saw him in Walmart once and he was pissing down the aisle with his IFB still clipped on his jacket. Morning shows in Shreveport suck now.

I miss the morning show days of Ed/Sonya/ Mark Rowlett

Jeff Ferrell/Carolyn Roy/Candice Jones/Ed D

BTW, What ever happened to Candice Jones. I saw a facebook profile with her old KSLA picture, but first and last name was unknown.....I guess Candice Jones were her TV name.

Why the delay of KSLA? are they having problems? ;~

Not being from Shreveport, I find it odd that a change in graphics gets so much attention instead of the quality of the news coverage.
Can't say I've ever read this much on the subject in any other local TV forum.

At 12:18 AM, January 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@1:53 PM

The Shreveport market gets so little attention on this blog we tend to go on and on about the littlest things, and never stay on topic.

At 9:54 PM, January 06, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I feel the graphics are way too busy. Need to be toned down a bit.

At 10:48 AM, January 07, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's not what we are into these days. The more the better.

At 1:12 PM, January 07, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So when is KTBS going to finish painting their news set? I can see particle-board in the wideshots.

At 1:49 PM, January 07, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Really? Are they sticking with Republican Red, or changing the color?

At 7:10 PM, January 07, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@ 1:12PM --
I thought I was the only one who noticed the OSB board on the set. If you look at the bottom next to the floor you can even see the red glue they used for the joints. I work in construction and wasn't sure if this was a "look' they were going for or not. Either way, it really shows up on my HD bigscreen.

At 2:14 PM, January 10, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Now that you mention it, I've seen what you're talking about. Wonder if there's any duct-tape in the shots somewhere?

At 11:06 PM, January 11, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is what you get when a place that builds expo booths builds your news set.

The weather "center" is so awkward to me.

I mean those poles that look like mop handles with the "monitors" on it and the cheap looking labels above it.... plus to leave or enter you have to walk in the shot of the left anchor.

Also, someone please tell them it does not look cool to zoom into the front of the desk and show a promo on the screen.

Who is running this place now?

After posting a link to the picture, I noticed something. The "silver band" near the floor around the whole set is is reflective.....WHY WOULD YOU HAVE THAT IN A STUDIO?

I noticed that it is painted gray on a recent newscast...guess they realized it wouldn't work

At 11:22 PM, January 11, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have seen some pics from behind the set. Is that windows that look into the studio from a hall or something?

Yes it is.
