No Chief Weather Guesser For KARK

Arkansas Business.com reports KARK has hired a new meteorologist. Darby Bybee will be joining the Channel 4 weather team at the end of August. AR.com reports the station has dropped the position of Chief Meteorologist from the roster...taking the station towards a team effort toward weather guessing.

This sounded a bit weird at first read but the more I pondered, the more sense it makes.

What this means is.... they don't have any trust in Brett. If they gave it to the weekend guy, Brett would get his attorney after them. After Brett's cntract is up and they let him go because of "poor ratings" then you'll see someone come in with "Chief" on their name tag.

Yeah, that sounds very plausible and probable.

What was up with Merideth Mitchell (filling in for Tom this morning)basically ignoring Alyse on the couch. Whenever she spoke, her comments were directed only to Ashley. Awkward!

I saw that! What was with that? I'd rather just see Ashley and Alyse anyway.

MEOW!

My guess is that no Chief Met might be easier for the team. No one person would be obligated to come in every time there is a severe weather outbreak and step on the toes of the other equally competent on-air talent. As a viewer, you could see the tension on KARK.

Why would you need a Chief Met in the first place? It is all recycled from the National Weather Service anyway. Anybody with an internet provider can see radar, severe bulletins & forecasts straight from the source. Not a lot of brain power required.

Add or subtract a degree in your forecast just to make it seem interesting. Say partly cloudy instead of partly sunny to make it your own.

Is Meredith a met?

Please give us more Tracy Beene. She is so much better than Meredith !!!

To 5:17

Meridith is just as much a "Met" as any other weather readers on TV.

Anyone can read the forecast from the NWS which is all they do and add a little drama to it.

The news anchors could read the forecast and save broadcast stations a ton of money in not having to hire a "Met."

Probably the coming thing.

Also, why does it take three people to keep you entertained in the mornings?

Why is Tracy Douglass not there anymore? She was great !!!

I don't know, Tracy! Why aren't you!

Great at what? Other than mentoring and being a "Big Sister" to Beth Ward what has she done that was so great.

For a person in the know: are the women who do the Cleo's furniture commercials, are the mother and daughter or sisters?

Aunt and niece. In one commercial the girl said "Aunt Jennifer."

Speaking of Jennifers in commercials, what happened to the Watson's girl? It's hot, and you need a pool.

Only person that fits this category would be Lanny Lardner (KARK-TV, late 70's). Now that was/is a dame. She went from KARK to WSM, Nashville.

Google and see.

Correction: Make that Lonnie Lardner. It's been a long time.

I'm from the area of Nebraska where Mr. Bybee was broadcasting before he made the jump to Arkansas. It's a shame that he's leaving so soon. He did a pretty good job as a weather forecaster and storm chaser here, and even showed promise as a general-purpose TV personality for topics besides just the weather. Oh, well. That's the way it goes in the broadcasting business. Bye, bye, Bybee. I hope you're getting a better contract in the new place. At least a few of us back in the cornfields wish you well.

2:47 post was great, but all of them had KATV ties at one time or another. C. Long still could hold her own in the LR market as well as K. Minton

It would be a great thing to have Anne Pressly back in our lives. She was a great source of how to live your life and wasvery inspirational. She could lighten up a room just by walking in it. We miss her tremendously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't need to have a chief meteorologist if you have a team of qualified meteorologists. Why put one person over another. They all do the same thing.. predict the weather and track storms.

At 8:32 AM, August 24, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They don't predict the weather. They don't have the equipment to do that. They just read what comes from the NWS and change it a little to make it seem they are predicting. Not one weather person on LR television has ever worked at the NWS. They are just putting on a show to sell commercials for the station manager. That's it.

I love the angry anti-weather guy. he puts the same post in every weather related blog. hes as predictable as the summer heat.

Not angry, just telling it like it is. If you had ever worked in a television station you would know that.
