KATV Viewer Not Happy With Choice of Music...

This from an emailer: Why did KATV-TV, Channel 7, feel the need to add a goofy Friday the 13th music bed to the beginning and end of its report on the poor guy from Alaska that was beaten to death by four teen-agers. The report, by Roger Susanin, which aired Friday at 6 p.m. didn't need the hoaky effect which is the kind of thing you'd normally do to a Halloween feature story.
Why?
The guy DIED after being chased down and beaten for no reason, isn't that scary enough without embelishing the already tragic story?
One of the tackiest things I've seen in Arkansas TV news in some time. Would love to hear the KATV News Director defend it.

Here's the package in question

Can't stand this low budget WABC wannabe station...

The people at KATV are unbearably ignorant anyway. They call themselves "the spirit of Arkansas". Anybody ought to know that a TV station is not a spirit, and a spirit is not a TV station.
The story of the young man from Alaska being ganged up on and beaten to death by the Malvern Four is horrifying enough without any added sound effects. There was another young man who was attacked and was just lucky enough to get away.

I didn't see the story and the link isn't working on my computer...but I've seen plenty of creepy music added to creepy crime stories in the past at stations of all sizes and even at the network level...that doesn't mean its a good choice though. I will say that overall I like rodger and most of the people at 7 and I find it weird that one email becomes a blog post. It seems like the board master may have an ax to grind with 7. The strangest thing to me is that other stations didn't cover the story more.

boo hoo. what's creepy is the cash for gold commercials and jus about every station is airing them. get a life "viewer".

Creepy yes, but it is more bad judgement and poor taste.

My previous station was slammed for something similar to this. There was a triple murder at a well known restaurant chain, and in the package the station showed the body bags being removed from the building. Before the end of the day, they had made a new POP promo, and used the body bag footage in the promo. There were so many complaints that promo was pulled. Now the person who thought up and created that promo did not get in trouble. Oh no. After this happened this person was promoted to a GM position at a sister station, then was promoted again to corporate and is still there.

I can't stand channel 7 but I really didn't think this was that bad. A little music at the beginning and end...big whoop (there were no sound effects that I heard). I thought the story was actually pretty decent....for KATV standards.

Oh, man! Doesn't ANYBODY have some love for the ol' Circle 7 Ranch? After all, Big Pard isn't running the show anymore, and the previous News Director is out of the picture.

Yep, and the problem is still here.

Scary enough to see John Hudgens doing his Earnest impression character once again.

"Scary enough to see John Hudgens doing his Earnest impression character once again."

John is simply being paid to do a character - Ron Sherman is the agency doing the ads - it's his creative team making those decisions. He will do just about anything to make a buck.

As for channel 7 - don't you know they are number 1 and the best at everything?

KATV is just losing it. Still no HD, the building is falling apart, and now too much hair product is affecting judgement.

By the way, the new Cash for Gold commercials suck. Bring back the rubber chicken.

OMG. There's nothing wrong with the use of that music. Would I have used it? Probably not, but I was expecting much worse by the tone of this post. When you're number one you expect critics. At least KATV knows that you're all watching.

I think the reason many people on this blog (including me) have bashed 7 is because sometimes they seem lazy. That being said I didn't feel that way about this story. I thought it was told really well, the music may have been unnecessary but it was far from tacky. This is the first post on this board that I think went overboard trying to bash 7.

Very poor judgement to play a song like that during a heart breaking story.

TV stations cover all the shootings and muggings and car wrecks because it is easy. All you have to do is listen to the scanner and roll when the story happens.

Anyone from out of state that is staying in LR for the night and watching local news would think that this it the "tragedy capital" of the United States and really paints an ugly picture of LR, NLR and Pulaski County.

There have got to me more stories out there than just crime, crime and more crime.

Lazy news gathering and no real investigating going on. What a joke.

At 12:23 AM, August 03, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not sure if I wasn't listening closely enough or if the link took me to a a version of the story aired in another newscast, but I didn't hear any Friday the 13 sound effect.

As for no HD, I'm not surprised that they're the last to make the switch but guess what -- they're still the number one station in the market. The audience here doesn't care about it as much as critics make it sound like they do. In fact, no study I've seen has shown that going HD gives any sizable bump to a station, even when they're first.

HD seems like big hype about a little improvement to me. I bought a new tv to see what it was about and now that is the tv that we watch the least.

I guess 10:42 doesn't think stations should cover a murder where 4 teens beat a man to death....ok...and if anything the stations in LR cover less crime than most markets. Ever watch a newscast in Memphis or st Louis?

I watch KARK most of the time, but I don't really have the hate towards 7 that many on this blog seem to have. I really didn't see what the big deal was with this story. It had a tiny bit of music and there definitely were not any sound effects. Seems like much ado about nothing to me.

Can we please talk about hair again? OMG!!!

KATV will have HD newscasts in the near future. Nick Genty is the news director there now. Give him time. He is already making a positive difference in that newsroom. It's tough. There's a long-standing culture that has to be changed and it's not a quick fix.

At 9:11 PM, August 03, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What does KATV need to fix? They are still a dominant number one station. Isn't that what counts? BTW I agree with the majority of the posters that this post was ridiculous and the story was perfectly fine.

Channel 7 may be number 1 in the evenings (isn't THV number one in the mornings right now? May be wrong...) but they need some serious updating. A crumbling old building, hideous sets, old school graphics, and anchors and reporters straight out of 1996. Not saying their product isn't good, it could just LOOK a WHOLE lot better. Let's hope Genty can get the ball rolling on some updating.

about the only thing that bothered me about that story was that roger sounded like he was talking in a cave when doing his voice track. STEP CLOSER TO THE MIC!!

All this HD stuff on KARK on every promo. "In HIGH Definition."

O.K. If you have HD you know it already. If you don't have HD it doesn't matter. Waste of time running those.

Nuff said.

5:54 I would much rather see Alyson on the morning show than Beth who had no personality. Evening news is a better place for her.

Just saying that it's lazy journalism. You must be part of it. Don't you get bored covering all that crime. And, by all means, if Memphis and Detroit do it we have to here too. Also, Memphis is 5 times larger than LR and so is Detroit. But let's do the same thing they do. LR television has not had an original idea in decades.

At 10:50 PM, August 07, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

obviously no one seems to care about the original topic of this post, and 7:44 did you have a problem when EVERY NETWORK played music for their coverage of the Japan earthquake. The prudes on this board are too funny! This board is filled with bored PAs and bitter lifers.

10:44 the poster you were responding to was making the point that LR does NOT cover news like St. Louis and Memphis...and I agree. I've worked in Memphis and LR (now out of the biz) and I can tell you that the two markets have very different approaches, also I don't think it's fair to criticize covering a truly heinous crime. Just my 2 cents.

At 8:46 AM, August 08, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let me settle this for you guys.
1. The LR market DOES cover too much crime.
2. There was nothing lame or lazy about covering the crazy crime that was the topic of this post--in fact it was lazy blogging to suggest that :)
3. Now that thats settled lets go back to arguing about the important stuff--like people's hair and weight.

Let's do!
I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out who is the former beauty queen on the THV morning show.

There never has been one until now.

Fifth place is not a queen.

Robyn (Lowery) Richardson - finished in the top 3 in Miss Arkansas Pageant when she was in college late 80's/early 90s - That may be who you are talking about. KATV has had a few for former pageant contestants, so nothing new in this market.

Probably because it is a "Water Buffalo" would be my guess. Research, research, research.
