Who is Arkansas' Sports Leader?......

Was KATV the only station to carry the press conference announcing University of Arkansas basketball coach John Pelphrey had been fired? I didn't have my tv on until about 10 minutes into the press conference. KATV looked to have carried the presser in its entirety while KARK and KTHV carried regularly scheduled programming.

Did not see the live coverage but on KLRT News @ Nine, Kelly Dudzik was reporting from Fayetteville and she led off with talking about just getting there and used the restroom at a convenience store and bought a candy bar....on air!!!

Man, ch 7 cut into programming twice. Once for pelphrey (I saw) and I guess the other about where ualr wad going in the ncaa tournament.

They were live in fayetteville for the shows and had a reporter live local on pelphrey reaction and a reporter live at ualr with the team.

Only little rock station with that live coverage.

That's tough to pull off on a weekday much less on a sunday afternoon.

agreed, 4 knocked it outta the park sunday night

I thought seven did well overall in both shows and the cut ins.

What happened to aaron?

KARK regularly out performs KATV on coverage of big events. KARK has been a better news station for some time now. But any Little Rock station is still capable of winning a story with the exception of KTHV. 11 may be too weak right now. All things considered KARK once again had better content and production then KATV on Sunday night.

I should have said "than" KATV not "then". I should proofread before posting.

4 doesn't know ANYTHING out of the park... and that's why their number 3... in everything. Lol.

"4 doesn't know ANYTHING out of the park... and that's why their number 3... in everything. Lol."

Double check your ratings, Sparky. KARK is number 2 at 5pm and 6pm. They have a woeful 4th rated NBC network. It's very possible with ABC and CBS prime numbers KARK would perform even better at 10pm and in the mornings.

But in terms of news coverage. Not ratings. I would agree with the previous poster. 4 is consistently better. 16 is consistently better than 7. 11 may have ratings numbers but their news content is the least of all stations. Many experienced broadcast journalists in this market would probably share this same opinion.

Props to KATV for their Pelphrey firing coverage, but they're not even following UALR in the tournament. That's a credibility killer. Still like Sully though.

KARK is good with the Raz Nation, but their Little Rock team is shaky at best.

KLRT has the best duo in the market with Raath and Adsit. From what I can gather, are the most balanced in coverage.

THV also shows balance but their Hog Zone stuff is a total Raz Nation ripoff.

All in all, they each have strengths and weaknesses.

Agree with previous poster, from a broadcast journalism standpoint, 4 is consistently better at story quality than the others. They have horrible technical problems sometimes, a network that screws them almost every night and over-sensationalized promotions, but I think for quality of newscast content 7 days a week, 4 is the market leader.

Are we talking about news or sports leader? The original post says sports leader. If that's the case then what are the standards we are judging?

Who really cares? This stuff could be argued all day and night.

Let's talk about how bad the on-air people and sets are. That's what this blog is for anyway.

I should be a rule that no female with a high-pitched voice can be a reporter, anchor or host. Drives me nuts and there is at least one on each station.

Tough ending to ualr game.

Fox was there but didn't put light on shot.

Reporter was in pitch black, should have stayed home. Wouldn't know the difference.

i think mark edwards can be annoying on the sat morning show but i love his sports at night. he just has fun with it.

that girl though is a joke at 11. almost as much of a joke as the girl on 4

Aiyana on 11?

Ohara on 4 has an annoying voice.

At 2:08 PM, March 16, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not sure about best overall sports deparments, but best sports anchors hands down are Sullivan and Raath. I like Aaron Peters, but he's not really considered part of the DMA.

Edwards at THV has his own schtick - it works for him.

The OHara girl at KARK is likeable on air, once she gets it down, she'll be a good one.

Will Wes Moore stay with thv now that his wife is working for a competitive station???

At 10:20 PM, March 16, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He is sports director, no matter how much money he makes that should stand for something.

Id hate to go from that to another local station as the new guy and perhaps just a sports reporter.

everyone has a fine sports director.

KARK O'Hara - I just cannot watch her. She sounds like she's talking baby talk. And her hair ... what's with the extra long Farrah do? She would be taken more seriously if she lowered her voice an octave or 2 and cut her hair to shoulder length.

At 12:10 AM, March 17, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Courtney, O'hara, Aiyana all have voices that are pitched way too high. Sounds like screeching. Best female voice on LR television is ? Let's have some entries.

Anyone who says "nyews" instead of "news" and "Nyoon" for "Noon" needs to go to a broadcast school. If you think that nyews and Nyoon are correct, listen to any announcer on national television. Case in point would be NBC Nightly News or any network news program and take a lesson from announcers that will make more in one year than any local announcer will make in his/her lifetime.

O.K., who has the best voice and enunciation of any female in LR market?

Best female readers at each station?

7- Christina
11- Liz
4- Wendy

now who is the anchor that says "nyune"? Can't figure out who you're talking about!

KARK 4 was the only station consistantly live from the high school basketball championship. KARK 4 was the only station that took its satellite truck to Dayton, Ohio to cover the Trojans. They were live at noon, five, six, seven and ten. Also provided content for the morning show.

At 9:05 AM, March 17, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

MH at 4 says Nyune. Annoying. Wendy is also annoying. Best? Munoz, Smith, Massey and Scott.

Don't believe anyone is suggesting KARK is the number #1 station in Little Rock in terms of ratings.
But it is being suggested that 4 is often providing the best broadcast journalism, best weather coverage, and the best overall sports coverage with the strength of Razorback Nation plus two Little Rock based sports people. There have been enough examples over the past two years to support this claim.
Just today a nice reference from the Arkansas Times on 4's recent coverage:
"But a better course for some unhappy parents than reflexive defense is, first, a read of this reporting from Channel 4. The suggestion is that financial and management problems might prove to be worse than honest mistakes."

4 still has plenty of room to improve. But we're patient. For the most part we like working with each other, and we believe we have a good future.
In the meantime it would be nice if 4th place NBC could offer more support in primetime.

Sincerely,
-KARK

I have no connection to any of the LR stations, but I see a big improvement in the content and quality of reporting at 4.

MS at KARK along with the bald- headed weather man.

Also MS says Nyews instead of News.

The primary responsibility of a station is to make money. If they can serve the public interest while they are at it, well, that's just a bonus. As long as you provide value, you will remain employed. You are all nothing more than little interchangeable, expendable cogs in a corporate machine. Don't ever delude yourselves into thinking otherwise, especially when it comes to time to renew your contract.

TV newsrooms are expensive operations. There might a time in the not so distant future when Little Rock might not have four network affiliates with independent news operations. Wonder which LR station might be the first to shutter it's newsroom?

"Did not see the live coverage but on KLRT News @ Nine, Kelly Dudzik was reporting from Fayetteville and she led off with talking about just getting there and used the restroom at a convenience store and bought a candy bar....on air!!!"

Hey, I guess if the three early morning people on KARK can talk about smelling farts while we are eating breakfast, this is mild. That subject at anytime is purely junior-high level talk. Very poor taste.

Good question. Thankfully the TV business has recovered some. But if the shaky economy continues I think Newport (Fox 16) is the most vulnerable. Gannett (KTHV) is the next. It's a big company but is been slashing news expense more than others, plus its got all those newspapers...not good. Nexstar (KARK) is tight ass company but it's a big company and seems capable of riding out down Econ times. Haven't heard of Nexstar furloughing anyone yet. Allbritton (KATV) seems to have really reduced news expense too. Not as big as the other companies. Don't know if this helps them or hurts them.

Fox 16 and KTHV get my votes to close down news first if the economy tanks again.

The only reason KARK is 4th in news program ratings is that KETS does not have a news show.

KARK doesn't get the ratings...They're to cheap to pay for them. They rip them off.

David Raath was sick that day, and Fox 16 had to Scramble to get someone up. Despite that, Kelly did a great job improvising with what she had. She was a real pro.

I believe that Fox 16 a.k.a. KLRT, is giving us a preview of the depth that their HD news set will have. If so, KTHV will have to expand past the weather garden to keep up.

"KTHV, first with some HD, but not first with all in HD."
