KFTA/ FOX 24 Taking the 9pm News To The Edge

KFTA-TV is proud to announce The Fox 24 News Edge premiering tonight at 9pm. The Fox 24 News Edge will feature Dana Sargent and be a more contemporary newscast designed to appeal to a new generation of media savvy viewers. “News Edge” will deliver the news of the day in a unique, fast paced format. Highlights will include top-of-mind stories, a full weather cast and the top sports headline of the day all in the first block. The announcement was made by Mike Vaughn, Vice President and General Manager of KFTA-TV and KNWA-TV.

“News Edge will feature cutting edge graphics that are designed to appeal to a younger demographic. This will give News Edge a look and feel unlike any other news program in Northwest Arkansas,” said Mr. Vaughn.

Other franchises will include Fox 24 “Weather Edge” and Fox 24 “Sports Edge”.

“Weather Edge” will feature a complete forecast from Chief Meteorologist Dan Skoff in the first segment of the newscast. Other highlights will include exclusive 3D viper radar, a complete River Valley forecast and the ability to give viewers the forecast one hour before any other local newscast.

“Sports Edge” will feature Courtney Timmons delivering the top sports stories of the day one hour before any other local newscast. Other highlights will include up-to-minute scores, live shots from sporting events while the game is still playing and unique stories of local athletes.

snicker, snicker...more marketing smoke and mirrors here. Love how we're making this just for the youngsters! Oddly enough, they aren't even watching television anymore, they're getting their news online, on blogs, watching tv on demand on network websites and occasionally dipping into cable. Sarge ain't bad, but this is a losing battle if you're aiming at a "younger" demo. How about trying something really over-the-top that might get the attention of viewers? How about setting something on fire on the news desk each night? How about some of those stupid sports tricks Aaron used to do on 40-29? At least do something different -- the definition of which has nothing to with re-arranging your rundown, oh friends at KNWA, Inc. Yep, Nexstar -- same crap with new wrapping regardless of market.

Yawn.

9:10 has made up their mind before even watching. NICE

At 12:21 AM, February 20, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

...you could be right. Doesn't mean it isn't going to be a decent cast, but the marketing of it is pretty weak, if we're talking about the demo everyone wants to sell. It's like the youth vote, or the Chinese market - a goldmine, but getting it to work is the trick, and so far very few people have managed to do it. I'm sure it's worth a watch, but the copy coming from the GM doesn't sound promising. Oh well, in other markets, they fire the talent first, then mess with the rundown later if the old way isn't working. Guess there isn't much the talent has to worry about at KFTA...but it sounds suspiciously like when KNWA had a "grand unveiling" and only put up plexiglass things behind their set...hocus-pocus.

does this even still count as a news cast? Sarge should be one of those entertainment ditz reporters on the tv guide channel instead of trying to fool everyone that she's actually doing a newscast.

Sarge is a poor excuse for an anchor? Does she even know how to report? I doubt she could cut a package under deadline pressure, let alone pass bio.

No really this is the funniest stuff I have heard in a long time. THE "EDGE" what a joke! If only they could get Nancy Grace to do the leadin voice work.

This is a presentation put on by the same demo they are trying to reach. These folk know what they are doing. What is a joke is the comments from bloggers in the biz who pretend they know more than they do and continue to churn out the same product day in and day out without ever examining the need for improvement. Their answer is to throw rocks at those who do.

At 11:02 AM, February 20, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Some of you are playing television here. Does Sarge really need to learn to edit and report to be an effective anchor? Bar none, Dana Sargent is the best anchor in the market. She understands the other nuances involved, but she has moved past it.

Yea, this market moves at such a rapid pace we just have to have our local I-540 wreck story before 10PM.
Good grief.
Maybe they should slow it down for the 70+ crowd who've already taken their Metamucil and nodded off before the 10pm cast. Like maybe Skoff could pitch the weather from a Hoveround motorized wheel chair emblazoned with the "The Edge" logo on the side. Or have Sarge pitch to him from a Craft-Matic. Yea - that's the ticket.

Hey, 10:35...

This is a presentation put on by the same demo they are trying to reach. These folk know what they are doing.

You sound like a 75 year old German woman here. Some of us have worked in broadcasting and marketing for more than 25 years and have some idea what kind of problem it is. You seem convinced casting is the solution, so you must not be anyone who works in either saies, marketing or broadcast management. This is a weak idea, and it was probably foisted on the GM and promotions by a numbnuts at corporate, with little to no financial backing to get it done, and absolutely no professional marketing guidance to assist. The "folk" as you call them at that company are left to their own devices to get things done that it takes pros a long time and much work to accomplish, with often very meager results. I'm not dinging the show itself...it's probably no better or worse than much of the crap on-air in NWA, and it's good to get a plug in every once in awhile and make the audience think you're doing something "new" when you really aren't. As for Dana, I've worked with her -- she's a regular human being, and actually very polite - I've worked with some real bitches in my time, and she isn't one of them. She also isn't a seasoned anchor with experience in any market but this one, but I'm sure she'd be the first one to admit that to anyone who asks...she doesn't pretend to be one. That said, she does a good job without much of a background in the biz and I'd imagine she'll go far if she can take the abuse that comes with the job. Back off her a bit, she's not the problem - for that you have to look south into Texas at Perry McDiddlebobber and his Deathstar friends.

At 5:41 PM, February 20, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

4:20 you back up my argument. You have an ax to grind, now you start telling how experienced you are. Just throw money at the situation is a classic line from someone who has not managed a budget. Name calling the ex bosses is a classic example of someone who has been fired. We can tell you are an experienced blogger though by the length of your rants, which probably shows off your news writing skills and is compensating for something else.

The "Edge" implies an impending plummet.

At 7:39 PM, February 20, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Things like this have been tried over and over to boost lagging Fox newscasts. They have universally failed.

The younger crowd is not going to watch this newscast. It doesn't fit their lifestyle. You aren't going to run a couple of fast pretty graphics over some inexperienced reporters and poorly written stories and draw in "high tech" young viewers. It is a failed and old concept.

The demo they are targeting simply doesn't sit around at 9 o'clock at night hoping to catch an "edgy" newscast. They are doing other things.

In central time zone markets where 9 p.m. newscasts have succeeded, it has been done the old fashioned way: breaking news, investigative reporting, compelling story telling, etc.

Stations like this get so excited over the gravy on the surface that they forget there needs to be some real meat underneath.

Shocking concept, I know.

At 8:10 PM, February 20, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey, 5:41, I didn't write the comment right before this one, does that mean that person is "an experienced blogger" whatever the hell that is. I posted one time here. And, yes, I have managed budgets. What you say gives you away as someone who has either just started managing one, or has never done so. I didn't advocate "throwing money" at the situation...you sound like you've worked for a certain company for too long and started to buy their line. You don't have to "throw money" at something, but you do have to do something more than slap a name on it like "edgy" to make it so. Keep messing with your rundowns and see what it gets you. As for me, I'll stick with 5 because at least I can see their signal and understand what they're doing. If you like calling something "edgy" and that works for you, keep it tuned there. Now you put away your crystal ball.

At 1:58 PM, February 23, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

People have been thinking "outside the box" for thirty years now. This kind of junk news thinking is actually now "inside the box."

If you really think you are doing something new at KFTA, you need to think a little harder. I haven't seen anything new at all.

The simple fact is that "eye candy" news leads to lower news ratings overall. It is a fact in this market and in dozens of others.

In the markets where primetime newscasts have pulled higher than 10 ratings, they have done it with in depth reporting, solid newscasts and top notch weather.

But good luck with your latest stunt and we look forward to your next "outside the box" format change in a year or so.

At 2:23 PM, February 23, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just a thought, but usually the show with the highest ratings is anchored by older males (in most markets) - I don't know exactly why, and it's changed some in the last few years, but it used to be that way in NWA with Burr and others, even Craig C. Not sure a bunch of younger anchors will bring more credibility to a local cast, especially when people turn to what they're used to seeing in the past. Some of these guys have "a lot of water under the bridge" with local viewers, hard to make inroads against them.

At 6:14 PM, February 23, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Please give me an example of where this market has ever tried anything like this.KFSM has been doing the same exact thing for 100 years,KHBS has only flip flopped their coverage area a few times and KNWA just ran off to cover only NWA. Whether we like it or not this is new to this market. Fast and bright graphics, news with a lot of entertainment added in and very very young talent,it will be hard to pull off but there is no one on here that knows what success they will have with this.

At 10:40 PM, February 23, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

At least it doesn't look like KNWA. I get the feeling from what Ive seen that they are not competing against the other three news products but trying to offer something that the typical news viewer wanted want anyway. The queston is can they find enough people that are not wanting what the others have to offer.

At 12:18 AM, February 24, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The results from other similar markets make it pretty easy to predict how this will turn out. A year from now, they'll be lucky if they have any more viewers than they do today.

And the last time I checked, all of the stations have a lot of young and inexperienced talent. If you consider that "edgy," then more power to you.

Why would someone watch young, green talent in western Arkansas do entertainment stories when they can see then any time they want on Fox News Channel, CNN, E, etc? The cable nets already draw higher numbers in the market than you do. I don't see that changing because you now have bright graphics and I have seen no sign of your station spending money to bring in top notch entertainment and feature reporters.

Oh, and the last time I checked, KFTA is KNWA. We heard a hear ago how you guys were going to launch a 9 p.m. newscast and kick everyone else's butts. Hasn't happened yet and it won't happen now.

You are targeting an audience that doesn't care about any locally produced show you do and isn't available to the set at 9 p.m.

Everything you are doing has been done before, without success, in other places. I don't see any indication that the folks at KNWA (excuse me, KFTA) are any better than any of the folks who tried it in other places.

At 12:23 AM, February 24, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

P.S.

None of the above should indicate to you that I think the other stations are great. They aren't. News shares are diminishing in the market so fast it is stunning. All of the stations are outdated, behind the times and don't invest in their reporters and producers.

One day someone will decide to bite the bullet and really modernize and they will own the market. But, as we all know, that takes serious money and for now it seems that all of the stations are content to either a) do what they've been doing for a while now, with fewer people and resources each year, or b) add some new graphics, run more feed material and call themselves "edgy."

At 1:05 PM, February 24, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It may be more "Edgy" but the content stinks. Why are there hardly any stories?

At 2:19 PM, February 25, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why? Because they have hardly any reporters of their own, and the main anchor (Dana) does hardly any work and the show's producer does hardly any work. They rely on regurgitating what the KNWA reporters are working on for the day. More work from the reporters = less work for them. A winning equation for the lazy ones, but shitty content.

At 3:21 PM, February 25, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, if I want to see KNWA's news, I'll just watch them an hour later, and get the full story instead of a 20 second blurb.

At 4:42 PM, February 25, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Now I understand why you say what you do about the new show. You haven't seen it. It's not the same stuff over than the big stories. The other three have 80% of the same content.

This 9 p.m. newscast is so sophomoric, my husband and I have given up trying to watch it. We "old fogies" are waiting for the 10 o'clock news just so we can to watch a newscast that doesn't give the impression that the staffers are "playing" newscast. Oh-by the way, we're not senior citizens. Not even close.

I don't need my news to be "edgy." I don't need my news reporters to engage in silly banter. It's a waste of my time.

And what's the age range you're targeting? The 15-18 year olds? They aren't watching the 9 p.m. local news. The young college crowd? They're not watching tv hardly at all, and if they are, they aren't watching the local station news at 9 p.m.

I used to prefer channel 24 over the other "local" news channels, because it was more about the Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers area, and less about Ft. Smith and Oklahoma; however, these casts are insulting. AND, I'm getting sick of the "edgy" commercials telling us how "edgy" this channel's newscast is.

Lame is what KFTA/Fox24 is! I guess we have "B" movies and "B" side of music and thanks to Dana and her clones we now have "B" side news! *YAWN*

I don't know why everyone is knocking Fox 24. I like it. The commercials are corny, but the format is a lot better. I only watch KNWA and Fox 24 because they aren't canned and they cover a MASSIVE amount of stories. Plus, Fox 24 has a hot chick on sports. It can't get anyone better!! LOL.
But hey, I'm a 26 year old "youngster", so what do I know.

I think it is shameful that the reporter interviewed the 14 year old son of the man who killed his wife, hours after it happened. All about getting "the story" and ratings right. Shame on you.Pathetic!!!

Hey Brad most people don't care about Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn. Her putting a squirrel on tiger's back is a great story if your 15. It's a big world I'm sure you can find some REAL news if you look hard enough.
