A Great Opportunity for "Someone"

Just found this on KARK's website:
Do you love the mornings? Can you wake my viewers up? KARK-TV is looking for a dynamic Weekday Morning Anchor/Reporter with a minimum of four years experience. Enthusiasm and creativity a must! You must have good writing and editorial skills. Send resume, tape, and news philosophy to Rick Iler, News Director, 1401 West Capitol Ave., Suite 104, Little Rock AR. 72201. No Calls Please!

Sounds like a GOOD opportunity for a former KATV'er that use to grace the TV screen in the mornings.

KARK's morning show will never be a good opportunity... unless they dump Mike Francis. He's just silly. Barbara does a good job.. but she needs two other strong people to have a chance against 7 or 11. KARK seems destined to stay in very distant third place.

You think Grayson would be good at KARK? No way... she's too meek and quiet. They need someone with energy.

Wait a minute- what happened to the guy who is already there?

You mean Ernie Paulson? They moved him to being a reporter at 10 p.m. He isn't any better there, either.

Who is anchoring mornings now?

Barbara Roberts is anchoring mornings at KARK and she's really good. Mike Francis is the weather guy and resident clown.. he is annoying before coffee. The show needs a hot, fun person to give it some life... maybe someone like Ann Pressly or Jessica Morkert. But it has to be a hot babe.

wow what a blow to the ego- to do the job for what a year-two? and be busted back down - my guess is KARK will soon be looking for a reporter unless Mr. Paulson enjoys the punishment.

So single anchor now is better than the guy that was there?

Barbara Roberts is better BY HERSELF... that means dumping Ernie, too. She's good... he's a goofball.

I can see Iler's next add now:
Do you love the evenings? Can you put my viewers to sleep...

I'm sorry but Barbara scares me! I can't stand to watch her. Agreed Ernie was a bit goofey but that's what KARK was going for. I believe at one time is was suppposed to be the "New Morning Alternative"

That's the problem with local TV. ND's and GM's all want new and fresh show but they just make cosmetic changes and the show virtually stays the same.

Kudoos to KTHV they found a formula and stuck with it. Now everybody in the market is tryi8ng to be like them and failing miserably. Especially "Arkansas' News Leader" I guess they're just playing follow the leader now.

Kark should get a babe like Ann Pressly or Jessica Morkert. You call them babes? I call them a waste of air time.

So who do YOU think are the best journalists in the Little Rock market? Or, are positives allowed in here ?

At 4:45 PM, May 12, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The Best are: Kate Sullivan, Scott Inman, Andy Pearson, Justin Acri, Joan Early,Bob Clausen, Anne Jansen, BJ Sams, Steve Powell, Christina Muñoz and Michelle Rupp.

It seems here lately Little Rock hasn't been getting it's share of new "talent." It's beginning to look like Little Rock is getting the reporter "lefterovers" that no other market wants. Little Rock's reporter standards use to be higher.

Please show me one in depth report any of the "best" Journalist in the market have produced. What have they done in the past year that is good journalism? I think you might be confusing journalism with "reading" the news. Any monkey can take wire copy and read it to the folks at home.

Any monkey can take wire copy and read it to the folks at home.

That has to br the dumbest thing I have ever heard said here. Just watch the new girls on GMA try to read something from the prompter. That should be enough proof to anybody that it is definitely a skill that requires a natural ability and plenty of experience. Anybody who thinks otherwise should not be allowed to comment here because they obviously have no idea what they are talking about.
You're probably the same poster that thinks Anne Pressly and Jessica Morkert are tops in the market. Jessica is improving but Ann needs to consider pharmecutical sales, quickly!

So it takes a trained monkey to rip wire copy and read it on air. And no I don't think Morkret or Pressley are "tops" in the market.

There is no real "journalism" going on anywhere in the market. If you disagree please point me to story where any station did an indepth report.

What do you mean by "real journalism" in this market. I thought local newscasts were supposed to tell us the events of the day, weather and sports. When you have roughly 10-15 minutes of actual story time after you take out wheather, sports and breaks, how are you supposed to put any "real journalism" on the air.

The problem also lies, as you should know, not in the talents hands but in the hands of producers, assignment editors and news directors. All positions that don't seem to require any particular skill or education in this market. Most reporters I think would love to be able to do more in-depth type stuff all year and not just weak attempts at it during sweeps. Even sweeps now rarely has anything of depth. Reporters have little to no say about what they do on a daily basis.

Current local newscasts don't do anything like that not because they don't want to but because they simply can't.

I'm not the one that listed the best "journalists" in this market. I'm simply poinitng out, like you, that there is no real journalism happening in Little Rock. And yes you're right this market is producer driven, reporters are not asked to bring story ideas to the table. As you said its unskilled and under qualified Assignment Editors and producers that are merely stacking time between commercials.

So... what stories do you want to see? At least be man enough to name them. It's shallow to say you want "something better" and just leave it there.

At 2:09 PM, May 17, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You know what, don't do anything differently. Then try and figure out why your news audience is shrinking. Perhaps the shallow peron is the same person that thinks status quo is the way to go.

Somone asked: What stories do you want to see?

Hey you have the entire state of Arkansas in which to find NEWS. The Little Rock stations seem so stuck with the thinking everyone that watches lives in central arkansas. Send your crews out and gather news from all over the state. If you claim to be "Arkansas' News Leader" then give us news from around the state and not just the cities in central Arkansas. It seems the only time LR stations venture "out of town" is during sweeps.

At 3:51 PM, May 17, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would venture to say there is an "outside Little Rock" story on the local stations... every single day. It's fine to offer comments, but, reality just gets lost in here. Some of the complainers just write untrue things... that's not cool.

If the folks at KATV spent the time they spend reading this blog, they would be able to bring us alot of different stories versus sitting at the computer trying to make themselves look good.

Katv need to put their diffrences aside and stop being player haters and so blind to see good people applying to jobs down their and hire them instead of letting them go out the door and if they hire people on what they know and skill they pocess Katv will be the news leader insted of being the news follower and they are to radical and treat their women like second class reporters.

I think Arkansas has a racial problem when it come to hiring minorities and you only see a few Africian Amercians on TV and a lot of European Anglo Amercians on the Arkansas TV News circut and i guess that is why Arkansas changed it from the Land of EOE and the it made the big mistake of changing it to the NAtural State and i don't think it is that either and from the 1880's to the 1950's Arkansas has never woke up from those times and the other states sourrounging us as Minorities doing well boasting high TV ratings and Arkansas need to wake up and put the women in higher poistions as well and stop making them second class citizens and all minorities third class citizens and with the wrong people in the helm os the ship Arkansas will never catch up with the rest of the world and we are light years behind the other states so wake up and also let me say i am proud to be a European Anglo Amercian to come forward to adress theis problem and Arkansas was never the Land of Opportunity and it is a joke.
