Time for Little Rock Station to Find a New Home

KATV/Channel 7/Little Rock is looking for a new home.  Since the station's building has been eyed as part of the Little Rock "tech park" being developed the station says it needs 3 years to find a new building.  Arkansas Business reports both sides have negotiated a deal for the stations current building and KATV will need at least 3 years to determine if it wants to build a brand new facility or convert an existing building to suit its needs.  KATV has occupied the Main Street location since the 1960's.

About time. That building should have been condemned decades ago. It's a breeding ground for numerous kinds of mold and fungus. It wouldn't surprise me if OSHA was bribed to look the other way during "inspections".

I had forgotten about that. What were they trying to accomplish by doing that and why???

At 8:42 AM, February 19, 2016, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is just the ignorance that breeds at KARK. They are not committed to news coverage.

At 9:11 AM, February 19, 2016, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually they do have tape archive you must be a noobie that's going off hearsay.

At 11:07 AM, February 19, 2016, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's not hearsay. They jettisoned their older tapes when they moved back around 2002 or so. A few folks then salvaged the tapes from the dumpster and KARK filed a lawsuit to stop them from using the tapes.

At 10:07 PM, February 19, 2016, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The tapes from the archives or early days of video tape at KARK would have been on
two-inch reel-to-reel. This would have included syndicated programs that bicycled from station-to-station and locally-produced commercials. They added using one-inch reel-to-reel machines circa 1976. The first "News" show air checks (late 60's to early 70's) were recorded on 3/4 inch cassette.

At 10:21 PM, February 19, 2016, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It happened. They dropped the tapes from the second story window into the dumpster. Most probably didn't even know what they were doing.

At 9:07 AM, February 20, 2016, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Much of KARK's early film archive was thrown away in the late 60s. (including some of the historic footage of Central High shot by Chris Button in '57, '58 and '59.)

More film was destroyed in '75, just prior to the move from 10th and Spring to 3rd and Louisiana.

Then came removal of a large film/tape collection prior to the move from 3rd and Louisiana to the current location near the Capitol.

Famous last words, "Aw, we'll never need that!"

A university journalism program or a library or museum could have used those.

At 10:41 PM, February 21, 2016, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, any university, library or museum would have been glad to get them. Shows a lack of, well, I don't know what. I guess a lack of caring. Disgusting for those of us who worked to create them over the years. They could have been copied to DVD.

KTBS TV Shreveport sold all of its 16mm film news archive (circa 1955 to mid 70's)
to buyers who stipped the film of its silver nitrate. The station management at the time apparently thought it was an ingenious way to make some quick cash. Lost forever were rare and often unique video recordings of historical events and everyday life during a 20 year period that included a time of monumental change in the deep south (as well as the nation and the world.) "Nobody wants that stuff" was the attitude of station management as the film was hauled out of the building. To this day, the appalling short-sightedness and ignorance of many local tv stations and owners remains a cancer on the tv news busines.

KATV has the best archive in the state. A huge bunker, underground, cool and dark near the Capitol. I got to see it once and was amazed at how far back it goes.

I do know that KARK threw an entire room of archival footage they had saved after the 3rd and Louisiana move away when they needed an office for a middle manager in 2010 or so. They don't even have footage of Clausen from when he started 20 years ago.

THV has a bunker too, its called a septic tank and they are drowning in it. People say KARK is bad or Fox 16 but take a look at THV. It has gotten so bad it is sad. Have they just given up?

THV special promoting medical marijuana for little kids to help ease pain the other day was just sad and not mentioning the negative side effects especially for children was just unprofessional and a lame effort to get likes on their Facebook page from this story .

You can get Craig O'Neill's old radio shows at UCA, but no KARK archives? KARK was dumb to throw their tapes away.

Says all the stations that have a news department. And might I add your station gives away a lot of free trips, diamonds and furs to get people to watch them. If they are so great, as you say, then couldn't they just provide a superior product and let it speak for itself? LMAO... I'm sorry I don't know what I'm thinking about... SUPERIOR PRODUCT... hehehe that's a good one. What is it now? KATV On it's Side, or something like that.
