Follow the Leader...WTF...

A tipster sent this in....I just saw a promo on KSLA that stated: KSLA News 12 at 6...soon to be one hour long!!! Coverage you can count on!

A couple of weeks ago KTBS, Channel 3, Shreveport, went to an hour long newscast at 6pm...and now it looks like KSLA is going to do the same. They can't even put together a decent 30 minute newscast but now they are gonna put their viewers through more agony with an hour long one. geez!
It's difficult to watch anything coming out of Shreveport these days..and Little Rock is getting the same way. The quality is way down in the anchors and reporters they put on camera.

Personally, even though KTAL's graphics and such aren't the same as KTBS and KSLA...I like watching them more. There stories are more local and less CNN. As far as KTAL's weather department, I like it. What's your take on this ATN blogster?

UPDATE: This change will take place this Thursday, the 22nd. Entertainment Tonight will move to 1:37 AM. Such a convenient time, isn't it? Why doesn't KSLA put their news on at that time instead? lol

Will channel 6 follow suit?

Thanks Todd Warren for writing about KTAL on the blogs, but NO. Graphics are to hard to follow, and the info is old during severe weather. No Doppler, No watchy during bad werather.

I think KTAL's weather graphics look cheesy...too busy and weird looking.

Expanding local news to an hour is probably going to backfire ratings wise which will probably hurt national spot over time.

Scuttlebutt was that KSLA was planning to go 1 hour in the Fall but KTBS heard about the plan and decided to beat them to the punch.
Whatever...

I'm not Todd Warren thank you very much...I just like watching 6 more because they feel more local. And as for their info being old during severe weather, if you are referencing their radar and the information about 3 or 4 minutes old, so is KSLAs. They just say its live.

ktal just has a bad rep. they have have a good met team and cool graphics, its just that 6's reputation isn't all that good.

Nope, KTBS has had their hour long newscast in the works for months. And they're supposed to add a 4:00 sometime in the fall...if the plan goes through. But that could change if they keep losing news staff.

Regarding the last post about a 4:00 PM news proposed: Why on Earth would they do that? They aren't CNN, they shouldn't be on ALL day. What about the programming that would be moved? Also, what are your sources?

I was thinking...what stations do all of you think are the "best" overall. So, if you had to say which stations are the best out of the Shreveport, Monroe, Ft. Smith, and Little Rock markets? Who would you pick?

I think KSLA has a doppler, I've seen it off the hwy on 1. KTAL's met team has some light loafers in it. The graphics are confusing, and nobody watches it. Todd Warren could set himself on fire and 4 people would see it.

From what little I've seen out of Shreveport TV, by DXing it seems pretty close to what is in Little Rock except that KTBS does do some widescreen SDTV on its newscasts, something not even done in Little Rock (We're still stuck with local news from all 4 majors+KARZ in 4x3 SDTV just as in 1969--IN COLOR!, lol). KTAL is a typical Nexstar clone station, its okay, lots of cheap eyecandy, but hampered by the lack of AP Wire services those stations tend to get a bit "creative".

Unlike in SHV, the LR FOX affiliate (KLRT) does have a legitimate news department. However, it still lacks a morning newscast. I do recall the former KMSS morning newscast some time ago, and it was pretty forgettable since it was "piped in" from Baton Rouge(?).

We had a similar situation up in LR last year when KARK (Nexstar-NBC) produced a 1 hour 7pm newscast for sister station and MNTV affil KARZ. A month later, KTHV put together a 30min newscast at 6:30pm all the time claiming it wasn't aping KARK/KARZ.

When Springfield MO's KSPR (ABC) went HD for local news, Nexstar's stable there KOLR (CBS), and KSFX (FOX) went widescreen HD within a few days. Then a few months later, that market's most popular news-station KYTV (NBC) went with real HD.

Local tv stations will put off doing something until someone in the market dares to do it first then its like a pack of hungry dogs following along.

I think KSLA needs to drop the "Doppler Network" crap. All it is a national composite that they have white lines spinning around on constantly. They need to stop using that and do as KTBS does and use their one radar and when it sweeps around, get the latest info.

Also,
I didn't know that none of the LR stations broadcasted in 16:9 format. That actaully did shock me. I find it funny that all 3 of the Tyler, TX stations have news in HD. I guess as you said, its a follow the leader kind of market.

I think KTBS is the best in Shreveport.

the best in the little rock market i would say is KTHV. KATV got too comfortable and has laxed on the quality of work they put out..on all levels. Ned perme has lost his luster...their newscasts seem so much like a funeral march..they read it so slowly. their morning shows suck..PERIOD! come on, the gals are on the air just to look pretty! And KARK..well KARK is KARK! At least THV puts some personality in to it.

As for the best in shreveport. OMG it would have to be KTBS. just because they look professional and have a decent news set/graphics. its weather department needs help with some new METS!

I disagree with the previous post about KTBS needing new mets. Although, I personally think Jennifer Gray is just a plain idiot. Marcy Novak is a very smart individual and should be on in the mornings. Joe Haynes on the other hand can get boring, but he does know his stuff.

To Drake...a good reporter protects his or her sources. (This is also a hint). Trust me on this, it's first hand knowledge about KTBS.

By the way, KTBS has now lost a producer, reporter and a reporter/producer.

Tell me this then if you know so much...where would they move Jeopardy and Inside Edition that is on now to??????

whats so crazy when u watch little rock tv you see so many great former tv reporters doing commercials..after they were fired. hmm and most were on katv? katv's quality in reporters/anchors has really went down hill. I guess the only qualifications for working at katv is being blond..and looking like a model. bring quality back to local tv news and people will start watching again.

At 4:36 PM, July 21, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

How much more "quality" do you want than blond and looking like a model looks?

Works for me.

How bout someone with brains. there are too many people on tv just because they look pretty and channel 7 is filled with them. the blond and ditzy channel.

How much "brains" does it take to read the news off the prompter that someone has written for you.

Remember, to be a broadcast journalist, radio or TV, you don't have to know how to spell.

Just spend 10,000 bucks to get your teeth whiter than any clothes in your closet, spend a couple thou on Max Factor makeup and maybe a wig or two and you're set.

Local news gets worse and worse every day. That's why I made the decision to get out of it. It's quantity over quality and it's true...your intelligence doesn't matter, but if you have white teeth and a cute smile, you'll rise to the top. That's not what makes a good journalist and news managers need to wise up or they'll be looking for a new job soon. The people watching at home don't want to watch idiots no matter how cute they may be.

The people in the biz who cherish accuracy and intelligence are going to leave it if stations don't stop pushing so much.

Anyone from out of state watching any station in the Little Rock market would think that Little Rock and Central Arkansas is the murder and crime capital of the United States.

But,after all, crime is the easiest to cover. Just listen to the scanner and respond when the Po Po do.

There has got to be more "good" news going on around this market than covering the murders and automobile wrecks.

Any station that would start covering local happenings at schools and public service organizations and leave the blood and guts stories out of their news "shows" would own the ratings.

"Investigative is a joke"

But wait a minute. That would take work.
