Fort Smith News Director Leaving

Source: KHBS/KHOG Press Release  Greg Shepperd, who since 2012 has served as News Director of KHBS/KHOG-TV’s 40/29 News, the Hearst Television ABC and CW affiliates serving the Fort Smith and Fayetteville, Arkansas, television market, has been named News Director of KOAT-TV, Hearst’s ABC affiliate serving the Albuquerque, New Mexico market.

“In his 3 years at 40/29 Greg has distinguished himself with a unique blend of exceptional team leadership skills, and an eye for what it takes to deliver great local television news,” said KHBS/KHOG-TV President and General Manager, Shawn A. Oswald. “Greg’s leadership has set us up for success in the short as well as the long term.”

Among his many accomplishments, Shepperd and the 40/29 News team have been named by the Associated Press as Arkansas’ Best Newscast, while he’s been honored for his contributions to multiple Edward R. Murrow awards and regional Emmy Awards.

Prior to KHBS/KHOG-TV, Shepperd was Managing Editor at one of the company’s largest stations, KCRA-TV in Sacramento, CA. At Hearst’s New Orleans station WDSU-TV, Shepperd was promoted from Producer to Executive Producer to Assistant News Director for his leadership role in that station’s coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath in 2005.

Shepperd’s last day leading the 40/29 News team is October 16th.

I think I speak for all former and current 40/29 employees when I say this...hallelujah and good riddance.

I'm sure you'll like the next guy tasked with making a bunch of pissy recent grads happy and in line at the same time.

Maybe his replacement will actually know how to do their job - let those he hired do the jobs they were hired to do instead of running every department in the building and railroading people with witch hunts and horrible investigations

Even managing the Little Rock kids can feel like sandbox monitoring. I can't imagine dealing with those kids.

Why is it that I can picture current and past 40/29 members doing a happy dance. Maybe now the station will actually keep decent talent and have news.

Nope. The next ND will have the same budget.

At 6:44 PM, October 03, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It doesn't matter about budget. What matters is morale. If you hire the right people, let them do their jobs. If they can't, then send them to the unemployment line. He hired an intern to produce the most watched shows. I don't know any ND who would hand over those responsibilities to someone with ZERO experience. Or why promote a pretty face who can't read or be professional. Or why have your weather or sports people covering hard news. Just a few of the mistakes he's made that the next ND will have to deal with.

At 7:53 AM, October 04, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yep, it sounds like his budget sucked. It answers every single one of your concerns.

I'm happy with 40/29. They are way, way better than 5News or KNWA.
At least I can identify people at 40/29. The hillbilly 5News or amateur KNWA, I can't identify with anyone from those two places, and it seems like every week there is someone new.

At 10:28 AM, October 05, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What the heck happened to knwa it seems like everyone leaves there after a year or two and it was the exact opposite a couple of years ago when they used to have the most relatable people knwa who had worked there for five years or longer . I know because back in 2009-2011 I knew some people who worked over there and they all told me they were all great friends and enjoyed their job .They all left after 2012 to 2014 because they wanted cheap crappy out of town hires. It seems like knwa started their downward slide in 2012 and got worse after Matt Turner left and spent too much money on the crappy looking new studio on Dickson Street they moved to.

Real question here for people who are in the know...

For the past few weeks I've only had access to KHBS/KHOG (don't ask), so I've gotten to know their news practices quite well.

Do any other local stations around here promote their news team quite as much as 40/29? It seems like they run at least two ads for themselves during every commercial break. I see Kelly and Paige's faces as often during the course of watching The View or Dr. Oz or Scandal or DWTS as I do during their actual news broadcasts. It seems like overkill -- I can't remember a station ever pushing individual reporters or news coverage so hard, especially on an audience who is clearly already watching. (Seriously, do you need to run commercials about your 5:00 news DURING your 5:00 news? You've got them hooked already, guys.)

Obviously you don't know how this market, or news for that fact, works.

They are more concerned with themselves and how they look to the market than the actual news. Their lead stories are 9 times out of 10 not lead worthy and their management is more than poor. It's easy to cover up the fact that you're an awful news source when people just like the person telling the news. "Oh I know that person, I see them all the time, I can relate/identify with them and they're hot!"

You said it yourself, that's what the viewers want. Times have changed. Ft he anchors use to smoke on set too. Do you want that back as well?

Bye bye!

Why is the title "Fort Smith" ND leaving? Uhh, 40/29 is in Rogers. The only station left in Fort Smith is 5News and even they are considering moving up north.

And @12:35 PM: Ugh, yeah, and it's that new guy on KNWA. The promos are ridiculous. It's like Neile 2.0. Barf. We get it!

At 4:09 AM, October 06, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, the ND is going to a larger market. The people he will be working with are not kids, so now let's see how he deals with these people and the egos that go along with them.

At 7:16 AM, October 06, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Albuquerque is a medium size market that will likely still have kids (under 25) ...but yes they will probably be easier to deal with overall. I'm sure he'll do fine with a bigger budget and less snot nosed brats.

What you people think about the new lead anchor guy on knwa?

At 10:22 PM, October 06, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I find Greg pretty inspiring. If you ever listen to his story, the guy has walked the walk and talked the talk when it comes to covering news. He proved himself an excellent producer at his past stations, and lifted every one of 40/29's dayparts to #1 during his first stab at news directing. Just stepping back as devil's advocate here, you've got to respect the guy.

At 11:50 PM, October 06, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have only watched like one segment of him. KNWA is a shell of what it used to be. I really don't care much for any of their anchors, except Channing Barker. The weather crew stinks now, never liked Dan Skoff's shtick. The Razorback Nation is only reason to watch that channel especially during football season. I really like Alyssa Orange, she will be a star along with Justine Ward. KNWA needs to get it together.

At 12:00 AM, October 07, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with you about looks/being trendy over real news. I hate to say more people care about them young news personalities being hip and cool instead of having the well the news?! I won't lie the more Paige and Kelly promos I see I am more likely to watch their newscasts.

At 3:52 AM, October 07, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't understand the whole "kids" thing. 40/29 still has Laura Huckabee. Sigh. And she's just awful with weather.

At 4:05 AM, October 07, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@11:50: Calling KNWA a shell of what it used to be is a compliment to them. They've always been atrocious.

At 5:47 AM, October 07, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@10:22 PM: Greg is not inspiring - the man can spin a story - that's not producing. And 40/29's news casts aren't actually #1. 5 News still has it. Again he just spins the numbers. If that's the case anyone who gets "jewish women aged 24 - 30 streaming online doing push ups" is going to be number 1.
People in New Mexico don't want him there either - they've heard how bad he is.

40/29 news director was so inspiring that he made the best weather met in nwa who worked at 40/29 for 10 years not want to work there anymore and then promoted the weekend met who was fired from kark in Little Rock very inspiring!

At 12:54 PM, October 07, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"best weather met" ...as if that's a difficult job.

At 9:47 PM, October 07, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Weather mets are pretty much a dime a dozen. All they do is get their weather from NOAA and just change it a little. Yeah, thats a real hard job.

At 1:09 AM, October 08, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ehhhh, I don't know where to begin with this crap. That's all.

I remember the former lead weather met. At 40/29 speaking a charity function about 3 years ago saying he would never leave 40/29 and this was the dream job in terms of working environment for him. They get a new news Director and the dream job was no more for the former lead weather met who left for Milliwakee to avoid the big mess from the news director was creating with the mass exits of coworkers.

The corporate peeps wanted the mass exodus, sooo he accommodated them, that's all, simple.

Exactly. Anyone can be a met with hardly any training. Easiest job in the "talking heads" world.

Mets are nothing more than an extension of NOAA only we see the local mets on tv and they get the credit for what the people at NOAA do.

His story is that he bullies people. He's horrible at training and leading. He is nothing more than a crybaby who thinks HIS way is the only way. I can't wait to see the numbers after 6 months in Albuquerque. He'll wear out his welcome quickly when he has to work with REAL professionals, not the prima donnas who only care about how good they look and not whether they can do their job. Hopefully whoever replaces him cleans house, starting at the top by getting rid of Paige, Daniel, Yve, and most of the producers.

Far from the crybaby. If Greg knew how to do his job instead of doing everyone else's, there's a good chance A LOT of people would still be there.

You don't get it. Forcing turnover is part of the job. The executives are glad they are gone.

Get rid of higher salary people & bring in flunkies with low pay. Execs get bonuses for that kind of shit.

At 12:08 AM, October 14, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's go through the job posting and see what qualifications the now former ND didn't have.

KHBS/KHOG TV, the Hearst Television-owned ABC and CW affiliate in the Fayetteville/Fort Smith, AR market is looking for the next dynamic leader of our news department. He clearly wasn't a leader, but more of a petty crybaby who would hold the smallest infractions against anyone and everyone.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, skilled communicator who leads our award-winning team in the execution of market-leading breaking news and weather coverage on all platforms daily. A communicator as in someone who yells and screams? Market-leading breaking news as in non-local? On all platforms as in forcing your talent to tweet or post an impossible number of times a day so that they don't have time to prep for their actual job?

Again, why did the cock bandit have his job?

Does 40/29 even have enough producers to clean house?

At 12:26 PM, October 14, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sounds like he did great at cleaning house of the whiney brats.

At 12:04 AM, October 15, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What whiney brats? He forced out Drew Michaels and Angela Taylor.

At 1:28 AM, October 15, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Exactly. Whiney brats.

At 5:54 PM, October 15, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Drew Michaels was not a 'whiney brat' but a class act who grew tired of not being in charge of his staff. He hated having to issue 'phases' to please Greg. "Let's go chase a flurry" is a complete waste of station resources.

Mike Jacques and Josh Taylor weren't 'whiney brats' that Greg ran off. Greg wanted anything other than sports, even though viewers loved both of them and their sports coverage. Mitch and AJ can't even come close to matching what either of them brought to the station.

As for other talent, let's count how many Greg ran off - Robin, Jules, Lindsay, Madison just to name a few. If you asked them, the #1 reason they all left - him. And who knows how many others aren't there because they got fed up with his petty mean cruel attitude.

If you want to talk about cleaning house, hopefully the new ND will come in and get rid of A LOT of the dead weight, whether that's Yve, Ernie, Adam, Terry, Marty, Brandon, Ryan, Josh, Paige. They should all be shown the door.

At 3:26 AM, October 16, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Holy hell. Well, 40/29 needs to re-focus on local news. There's too much national and international news. A lot of people in NWA don't give a f* about the pig thing "aka razorback"... So we're looking to 40/29.

At 6:14 AM, October 16, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They were all ran off for good reasons. And if you can't fall in line with the boss, you need to hit the door. It doesn't matter how talented you think you are ... you are not more important than the direction of the news department. You are just a hamster on a wheel, and it's not your wheel.

At 5:25 PM, October 16, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you're looking at 40/29 for local news, you're looking in the wrong place. Let's focus on "BREAKING NEWS" that doesn't affect a single person here. A mudslide in California? A dust storm in Arizona? A student protest in New York? Viewers don't care unless it impacts them.

Drew, Jocko, Josh, Jules - they weren't run off. They were all talented people who grew tired of being belittled and criticized all the time. When your chief met doesn't have control over his staff or your sports director can't cover sports cause he's chasing a flurry, that's not the direction a news department should be heading.

I only wonder where the celebration party is tonight.

At 5:11 AM, October 17, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Belittling and criticizing people is how we run then off.

Jules - they weren't run off. They were all talented people who grew tired of being belittled and criticized all the time,

That's the pot calling the kettle black.....lmao. Only if you were not a threat or in management but if you worked camera, audio, tape or master control, there were a lot of backhanded comments she use to dish out but couldn't take whe someone spoke up.

At 4:55 PM, October 29, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Backhanded comments? That was Shepard's only way of running the newsroom. He refused to give people a chance to do the jobs they were hired to do, or to promote anyone unless you bent over and took it without any lube. He enjoyed holding the tiniest infractions against his underlings until he could blindside them.

At 8:13 AM, October 30, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

But really guys.. lets start a "GET RID OF YVE" movement - need the second half of the Terror to get out of here. DUMB AS A STICK, RUDE AND DOES NOT DESERVE OR NEED TO BE THE ND HERE.

At 8:39 PM, November 03, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yve, Shoptaw, Roberts.. how about the entire managements staff? They all need to go. They're all worthless and clueless.

At 11:04 PM, November 13, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why don't they just get rid of everyone except Darby, Brad, and Laura?

Mitch and AJ are beyond clueless. The most Razorback coverage? That belongs to KNWA or 5. Mitch should just retire. AJ can barely get through one story without making a mistake. Why can't she slow down when she's reading instead of trying to speed read through every damn story? And why can't she cut her highlights so that there's not 5 seconds of silence?

Paige and Daniel are awful. Paige is beyond fake on-air in her appearance. The girl needs to fix her eyes because she looks Chinese. And please someone teach ther girl how to do her hair. It's going one way at 5, another way at 6, a completely different way at 9, and something different again at 10.

Daniel looks too immature to be on the air. They should send him back to wherever he came from until he ages 10 years. Why don't they have Kelly and Craig together for all four shows?

And behind the scenes, they need to clean house. Not only Yve, but all of the producers and directors. The entire news and production staff need to be let go. They are all clueless with no idea what constitutes actual news. They are so focused on BREAKING NEWS even though it has no LOCAL impact, or on TRAFFIC.

"OH MY GAWD TRAFFIC IS SLOW ON 49 AT 4:45. SOMEBODY WRITE IT UP!" It's called rush hour with no accidents you idiots.

"LETS TRY THIS FUNKY CAMERA SHOT BECAUSE WE THINK IT LOOKS LIKE YOUR JUMPING INTO THE ANCHORS AT THE DESK!" Why don't you just leave the camera steady and try for your life to keep them centered and not covered by graphic boxes instead.

At 10:04 PM, November 24, 2015, Anonymous Anonymous said...

HEY YOU IDIOTS WHY DO YOU KEEP MOVING THE DAMN CAMERA AROUND? AND CAN YOU PLEASE MIC THE RIGHT ANCHORS? HOW IN THE WORLD ARE YOU GUYS THE MOST WATCHED?
