Sinclair in Re-trans Spat with Dish

Looks as though KATV/Channel 7/Little Rock might disappear from Dish Network as its parent company, Sinclair Broadcasting is in a dispute over re-transmission fees.  Sinclair has set up a website for viewers to get info and air their concerns to Dish.

I loved the answer to this question on the website:

  • Q: Is this just a dispute about money?A: Although we do not believe it is productive to negotiate its private business relationships in the public, the inability to reach agreement with Dish Network is about more than just money.

UPDATE: 08/16  An announcement on KATV's website states a short term extension has been agreed to and they are working on a long term agreement.

Consumer gets screwed five bucks at a time on these spats. I put up an antenna & ditched cable TV. Don't need 200 channels of Flo.

Don't they pay a fraction of the price for local stations compared to what they pay other channels?

Some channels are lumped together into an all or nothing deal. If you refuse to carry one, the network jerks the other 5 in their package. Like the Viacom deal. Suddenlink refused & lost a few channels. They replaced them but aren't as good. But it sent a message that cablecos won't be held hostage

Depending on what state you live in, Suddenlink's lineup SUCKS as does KATV running minor league baseball games on 7.2 rather than network programming.

Most channels suck. They suck worse when you have to keep paying more & more. I dropped cable & now I stream. Haven't missed cable TV at all.

Don't Dish subscribers get ABC programming on another channel anyway? If so, they are just missing the local news, so who cares?

These "Spats" occur from time-to-time.

Not to worry. It will be ironed out and Dish will carry KATV when it's over.

Just a way to get news coverage.

Your cable bill is going up because of the likes of ESPN and FoxSports. Local channels are asking for an increase because they are being pressured by their networks. Years ago channels like KATV were compensated by the networks to be affiliates. That has changed, now the local affiliates are having to pay reverse compensation. The networks are seeking a bigger cut of the compensation affiliates get from providers like DISH. You're paying far more for channels you never watch than what Sinclair is seeking in retrans. The only way to end this is to have ala carte pricing instead of the tiers the cable channel demand. Here's a story about what you're paying per channel. http://blogs.wsj.com/numbers/how-much-cable-subscribers-pay-per-channel-1626/
While I'm not familiar with the Sinclair talks, I am familiar with DISH's tactics. They like to have blackouts so they can cry foul to the FCC. It's their gameplan. DISH network has been responsible for more disruptions than all the other providers combined.
That being said money is not the only factor. TV everywhere and digital transmission rights are also part of the deal.

BTW in the first quarter of 2015 dish posted a $351.5 million profit. An additional 50 cents to Sinclair won't make a difference to them.

You can sugar-coat it all you want. Dish won't pony up 50 cents. It will be passed on to the consumer. Just like all these other agreements. Consumer gets screwed.

cut the cord. stick an antenna on the roof. get a roku streaming device and pay for the channels you want to watch versus paying for the few you watch and hundreds you dont

Already have. I haven't missed anything on cable but a bunch of reruns & commercials.

Like on the Beyonce channel, the Encore (re-run) channel and anything CW runs along with KARZ's library of old sitcoms which are all occupying space on cable and sat channels.

Ala carte for cable TV is a horrible idea because you will pay for each individual channel and end up paying more for less channels. Horrible idea!

Cable and satellite companies are just like used car salespeople, they are programmed to screw you when they say, "Hello." Just sayin'

8:01, not ala carte cable, streaming boxes. And I have more well off friends to bum passwords from, so I get my stuff free.
